Teaching People How To Lead

How to Think and Speak Like a Leader

In our profession, the level of our success has a lot to do with the level our leadership.  Leadership is directly tied to your ability to influence others.

Many people think they do not know how to influence others.

This is simply not true; they have been influencing other people since they were a little child.

You know what I’m talking about, the three old that gets his way with his parents. Or the twelve-year-old girl that persuades her parents to go to a certain restaurant. It happens all the time.

Enter the world of home business.

I often share with my team that they need to show as the leader they want to become.

How to show up as that leader?

First, you need to get clarity. Think about:

  • People in your life who you would like to influence more are . . .
  • The way you would like to influence them is . . .
  • If you could tell them how they should think of themselves, other people or business circumstances, what would you say . . .

How to Think and Speak then go communicate that clearly and consistently.

3 Powerful phrases to help you shape people’s thinking:

  • “Think of it this way . . .”
  • “What do you think about . . .”
  • “What would happen if we tried . . .”

What’s the ONLY thing that will keep you consistent?

When you have the tough days, what is it that will keep you going?

What gives some people the strength to push through obstacles?

It’s vision.

It’s more than your ‘why’.

Knowing why are you involved in this business is important but there is typically not much emotion behind it.

If you don’t have a strong vision you won’t make it.

You are going to get the no’s to the business and or product, that’s a fact.  Your vision will give you the protection so you don’t get the ‘poor me’ syndrome. This negative thinking will destroy your belief and your ambition.

A compelling vision will protect you and you’ll become bulletproof unshakeable vision. How do I know? If been there.

Every day you must see yourself as already have accomplishing your vision.

To get started thinking about:

  • Who do you want to be?
  • What’s your brand?
  • What do you stand for?
  • How are you recognized by your company and family?
  • What are your dreams?
  • What do you want people to say about you?

Knowing the answers to these questions will help you to face your challenges.  I taught our kids a long time ago this: what people think of you is none of your business.

You MUST own who you are and your purpose.

Once you really internalize this you’ll be fired up. Your energy will totally shift because you know who you are, where you are going and that nothing is going to stop you.

Can you see yourself living your vision?

My friend, Richard Brooke’s book Mach II with Your Hair on Fire is a great resource to create a compelling vision or movie script.  It is all about self-motivation and vision.

What are the 10 things you want most in your life? Describe them in detail. Describe it with all of your senses.

Here’s a compelling question… how will you feel when your friends see you have made your vision your reality?

One more thing.

[bctt tweet=”Money is not a good enough vision for success. What you will do with it is.” username=”terrypetrovick”]

What are you going to do with the money and how that will make you feel is.

Take some time now write down the 10 things then write a movie script for a day in your life when have accomplished everything you wanted.
