Web Traffic

The term web traffic refers to the amount of data being sent and being received by a web site. Web Traffic is directly proportional to the number of visitors that visit that website and how many pages of the website they visit. To know which sites are popular and what pages on a particular site are viewed more number of times, web tracking is used. By using web tracking, many trends and surfing habits of the users are also known. There are numerous techniques used to collect this data which is then used to provide structure to sites. It can also indicate where the security problems lie.

Every website wants increased web traffic and they use several methods to increase the web traffic including Search Engine Optimization or SEO. When a visitor comes to a site, it is counted as one hit. On more useful clicks made by the visitor and opening more pages, the number of hits increases. ‘Hits per second’ is a very useful measure of web traffic.

Every web server automatically generates a list of all web pages served by it and keeps them in a server log file. Another technique for measuring web traffic is called packet sniffing. While monitoring web traffic, two things are measured; the number of visitors coming to the site and the number of pages accessed while still being in the same web site. Also measure is the average duration of visit on every page, most and least popular pages, timings when the web traffic is least and most, the paths through which the visitors reach the website and more. By having the knowledge of the sites that act as referrers to the website, marketing efforts can be targeted and also commissions can be paid to those sites accordingly.

To increase web traffic, a website has to be placed in search engines through advertising, including bulk e-mail, pop-up ads and in-page advertisements. Non-internet based advertising can also be used for increasing the web traffic. These days SEO has become a necessity. Almost everyone uses Google, Yahoo or some other search engine to find what they are looking for. What are the pages that we usually click on? These are the pages that come on the first page of the search results. What about thousands or millions of other pages that the search engine lists for us? They go unnoticed.

Through unpaid engines, the traffic that reaches a website is called ‘organic traffic’. There are some guidelines that need to be followed, use of certain keywords that give your website a good listing. Major search engines provide the facility for the websites to register with them and while this is a good way to improve your listing position, there is a lot of competition.

These websites use crawlers or spiders-programs that ‘crawl’ through your entire website, once you are registered. They traverse through all the internal links available in your web site, collect all the information about what your website is all about and then store it appropriately in their database. This is how we get the results sorted by relevance when we search for any word.

There is also some natural traffic that comes to a website due to its very obvious name. Examples are shoes.com, porn.com, flowers.com, eloans.com etc. These names are so easy to remember that they do not need search engine to be highlighted. Therefore they are also sold for huge amounts. Many people have registered common names and have sold them later in exchange of big profits.

Directing web traffic to your site is almost an art form and if properly done, can generate enormous revenue for your business.
