A COSTLY Lesson On Why You MUST Own Your Blog

April 23, 2010

Blogging

Have you ever thought about a Blog for your business?  Is the thought of spending money every month on web hosting keeping you away from owning your own blog?

OR

Have you decided to get a Blog but play it safe financially and just use a FREE Blog service?

All I can say it DON”T DO IT!!!!!

In the shocking video below, you’ll see where one successful entrepreneur made this FATAL and yes I do mean FATAL mistake that cost him 4 years of his life!

Please don’t let this happen to you.  And if you are experienced in online marketing don’t let it happen to your friends.

Friends don’t let friends use free blogging sites!

Instead, have them watch and learn from this video.  Then tell them to go to GoDaddy.com and get hosting for a wordpress blog.  Note: WordPress.com is different than WordPress.org.

Use a service like http://TerryPetrovick.com/GetABLog which will actually make you look VERY Professional.   Pay the money and invest in a better tomorrow for yourself! By the way Option #1 is what I would suggest.

I hope this helps you and the new people you know who are just getting started in online marketing.  If you have comments or questions please leave them below.

I agree Beverly. I know you had your challenges with being hacked and then getting a virus.

There’s a world of difference between being hacked and being deleted! Being in control is the best approach for sure.

Every smart entrepreneur faces challenges. The goal is to minimize them.

    Terry,
I can only imagine the horror of this happening to me. It truly scares me. If this isn’t a warning shot across the bow of anyone who is using anyone of the free services as their primary blog I don’t know what is.

Thanks for bringing it to everyone’s attention T.

    John

What a dilemma… the loss of 4 years hard work?
This is a great example of what can happen when you don’t own your own blog and not take the time explore all the options, thats available when first starting out. As many just go for whats “FREE” without realizing there are consequences down the track !!
This is why its important to plug into a system or to successful marketers like yourself where you can be supported educated and mentored with the “how to’s”, saving time and money.

Please make sure everyone know about this risk.

In the long run a Free Blog is pretty expensive!

You have a choice so, make it a better than terrific day!

    Hey Grant,
Very unfortunate indeed. It is unlikely that the free sites provide the ability to back up data.

Wow….what a bummer! I can’t even imagine the pain of losing 4 years worth of work!

I totally agree Terry, WordPress is the way to go. Not only does it give us total control and peace of mind, but full ownership in all of our work. And those who are afraid of the cost will find the prices associated with hosting your own site are incredibly reasonable.

Thanks for sharing this lesson with us, hopefully you’ll help others to avoid this type of loss….

    Thank-You Terry!

Because I have such a great mentor, in you, I started out on the right foot, with Go-Daddy.com, who also set up my Word Press Blog.

You mentioned that there was a monthly fee to owning your blog. I don’t pay a monthly fee, but I don’t think I am on Word Press.com.
I called once and the person that I talked to with GoDaddy.com couldn’t tell me if I had com or org. Is there a way that I can tell on my own? I know this sound nieve, but I’m still learning so much.

Thank you again Terry, for the information.

Terry, that is big. I have heard of blogger and wordpress closing peoples free sites down but one after 4 year!!!! That is nuts. You would think that Blogger would have checked out his blog in that time.

    Anyway’s great message Terry.

    You are welcome Val.

I haven’t lost a blog but I have lost hard drives and it is a real pain when you have to start from scratch. That why today my 3 computers are backed up regularly.

    Thanks for stopping by…
