Will you develop your business right the first time?

Not likely.

And that is PERFECT.

If you are like myself and many, many others . . . the truth is . . . you will not develop your online business right the first time.

We all make mistakes.

In fact, rarely do people accomplish anything right the first time they attempt it.  This is called being human; it is part of the fabric of life.  It is in the doing, the making of mistakes that we learn many valuable life and business lessons.

When I first got started in my first home business I did it wrong.

Some would say I was a success.

In fact, the CEO of the company said I would be the first person in the company to earn a million dollars.

You see, we had different interpretations of success.   His was products sales and enrollments.  Mine was  “Quality of Life” being with my family.

That year I was awarded “New Director of the Year” out of 65,000 people.

An award was not what I was looking for.  I was looking for a way that I could be home with my family and create a solid income.

The cost of this award was too much.  I had spent too much time away from them.  So, I sold my business and moved on to another business.  That one didn’t work out financially so I moved on.  And you know what . . . that one didn’t work out financially either.

I spent three and half years, trying my very best to create a business so I could create the quality of life I dreamed about.

Was this process frustrating? You bet it was. But, I was not giving up.

I had good intentions and I worked very hard but my thinking, my execution and my choices in companies were simply wrong.  My paycheck made that VERY clear.

I had to take full responsibility for my decisions and my results.  I knew that if I was going to be a success then it was up to me and only me.

My question for you is . . .

Do you take full responsibility for where you are in your business?

Do you take full responsibility for the quality of the relationships you have in your business and in your personally life?

Most people don’t.

If that is you.  The time has come to create some shifts.  No more blaming others. You must look at the part you play in bad relationships.

One of my coaches told me very bluntly, “Terry, for things to change, you must change.  For things to get better you must get better.”

Initially that was a tough pill to swallow.  I soon realize that she was right.

I became more determined.

I continued to feed my vision for success.  I studied successful people.  I studied their habits, their characteristics and then modeled them as best I could.

I did two more things . . . I had laser focus on my goals and I took action.

I gave it my all.

I worked on me.

The result . . .

Today, I have the lifestyle most people dream about. I have created a multi-million dollar business in twelve countries and I surround myself with high quality people who enjoy helping others, personal growth and skill set development.

My two kids have had two full-time stay at home parents from middle school through high school.  They are now both in their twenties.  And I’m proud to say that they are awesome people.

That is the pay out I was looking for.

And it was totally worth all the extra professional work, self-study and personal growth that I had to do.  I am not the person I was 15 years ago.

Where are you in your business?  What types of people do you attract?

If you are struggling with your business then odds are that you have more growing to do.  And that’s perfect.

Do you have a plan for growing personally, growing professionally, enhancing your skill sets and shifting your thinking?  If not, get one right away!

Odds are that you need a good coach and a support network that can help you during these challenging growth times.

Find them.

That’s your responsibility.

I encourage you to look at your thinking.  Realize that your current thinking has created your current lifestyle.  And if you don’t like it then you must change it.

Just know that if I can create these shifts in my life, you can too.

I believe in you . . . lot’s of people do.  It is time for you to show up differently.

Now, watch this amazing video below of people doing it right with perfect execution.

You can bet they didn’t do it right the first.

But, through a clear vision of what they wanted to accomplish, they have indeed created something pretty amazing.

ENJOY!

Please comment on your journey in your business.

Excellent post Terry! I too have been through many businesses and trials and tribulations. I’m not yet to the point where I want my life to be and yes, I agree with you, there is still a lot of growth I must experience to get there. Thanks for the continued wisdom sprinkled with your brand of great humor my friend. HOW OLD is that video? Those cars look like they are from the early 80′s!!

Hi Scott, thanks for sharing. What I have discovered is a lot of people and I’m sad to say some of my close friends jump from business to business trying to find the right opportunity.

While there is some merit to selecting the right company, most people look for success out there when they should be looking at their habits and actions.

As a success business coach I’m surprised at the number of people who do not want to be held accountable for their actions.

One of my mottos is: listen to what people say but watch what they do.

      Best of Success!

    Hi Terry

Thank you for a great post.

Your story is truly inspirational for me as I continue on this journey of self discovery. With all the “overnight” success stories around it is great to see that persistence and growth also lead to success for those who know where they are going and are prepared to act.

Wise words, Terry…I couldn’t agree with you more.

We all have our own little personal struggles in life; however, the key is to see them as only temporary and learn from them. We are always “works in progress”.

Thank you so much for sharing this.

      Hi Heather,

So many people struggle with their struggles. Does that make sense? They intensify them by focusing so much on them.

Once we learn to be OK with not being OK or to be comfortable being uncomfortable, our whole world can change.

Thanks for your energy and leadership Heather!

    Terry,
That video was absolutely hillarious partner!! It really made me laugh tremendously and for that I thank you my friend.

You really touched on a very important subject in this post. So many folks that “THIS BUSINESS HAS TO BE THE ONE”. Well, what if it’s not? What if the next 5 businesses aren’t THE ONE? What are you going to do about it? Will you quit? Or will you realize that maybe just maybe it isn’t the business that is the problem. Will you turn your gaze inward and understand that maybe your putting out the wrong vibrations. That your telegraphing NEED, WANT, PLEASE JOIN ME to the universe at large.

When you come to the point in your life & business that your just fed up with things NOT WORKING then congratulations! Be happy that you still have the desire to change and improve your circumstances. This place in life can be a catalyst to incredible success if you are willing to put in the work in self development (personal growth), learn true marketing skills (no more 3 foot rule!!), and meditation (connecting) then the world truly is an oyster.

    To Our Success my friend,

One of my most important lessons was when I realized that I had to Be, then Do, then I would Have the things I wanted.

I think a lot folks need to shift their thinking from when I Have the things, I’ll Do the things, then I will Be person I need to be.

They do not get that we must show up today as the leader we want to be.

In my vision workshops, I have people design the best you they can best with all the right stuff then get them to ask themselves this empowering question:

“How would the person I want to become do the things I need to do?”

This creates massive shifts in thinking… try it out…

    Hey Terry,

This is awesome, a great synopsis of what sets the winners apart from the whiners. When we move out of the victim mentality and begin to take responsibility for every aspect of our lives we become empowered and capable of anything.

I too have been through several business failures. It’s become very clear to me that self esteem issues have played a major role. I didn’t believe in myself but expected others to believe in me – duh!

My turning point has been in learning to go with the flow. I never felt comfortable harassing family & friends about my business(es), which naturally made me very bad at it. I’m really thankful for that now, because I’ve found ways to use skills that I excel at and enjoy to claim my spot as a leader and help others.

BTW, thanks for the video…laser focus, amazing precision and perfect execution – great lesson in a very entertaining presentation. Luv it!

    Hey Terry,
That is the truth about doing things for the first time and failing and not realizing that it is those failures that are part of your success and if you fail forward, that is where you want to be- moving forward.
Ya know, for me, that has been a huge obstacle for me, has been those tests and having the faith to move forward instead of looking for greener grass somewhere else or just getting paralyzed and not doing anything for weeks. Also what has helped me is just not giving a rip about negative people who shake my tree. I have come to see them as people who will be contacting me for help with loaning them money in the future.

Terry…there are so many good things in this post. I have been flat out on my back sick this week thinking a great deal about time, energy, hardships and so forth. I noticed something about myself that was intriguing to me. I was a bit stressed because of the time I was losing while I couldn’t move but it quickly moved into more self-reflection.

I was really in an immense amount of pain but instead of complaining and burying myself in the negativity of the pain I actually went toward the pain and started exploring the depths and roots of it. I actually discovered a revelation about myself through this exercise that was seemingly in part connected to this illness.

Now this was not immediate…it actually took a few days of searching in and out of being completely in an exhausted state…but the journey was quite good and positive.

It actually was probably a better use of my time than had I not been ill. One of the discoveries that has made the biggest impact on me these past few years is that if I am trying to force life into my view of what it should be…then…A) it is a reminder that there is something about me in that particular area that still needs growth… and B) being able to bring things into the moment of life working with them instead of trying to manipulate them is a far better way to live and move forward.

Much of how we grow in “success” has so much more to do with us and who we are than with any company or compensation plan or marketing scheme or anything else. All of these things are obviously important…but none of them will be of much help if the people wielding these tools is all twisted up inside.

    Great Stuff Terry!
