How to Introduce Yourself
What typically happens at these networking events?
Everyone sits around a table, the chairperson says this is how to introduce yourself, say your name, company name and what you do.
It starts like this…
“Hi my name is Joe Smith I own Joe Smith cleaning company. For 13 years we have been cleaning home and offices in the area. We pride ourselves (he says this with zero enthusiasm) in using no chemicals and we come to your house rain or shine.”
The next person, sitting down says, “My name is Phyllis Brown, and I work with the Fat Loss Juice.” (At this point, you see people playing with their blackberries and iPhones not paying any attention to her). She continues by saying, “Fat Loss Juice has been in business for 35 years and we help people with our yummy juices, shakes and cookies. A good referral for me is someone who wants to lose weight.”
The next person starts with “My name is Tom Deck, and I work with …” at this point you are totally bored out of your mind!
This goes on for 20 people…and no one is paying attention! Because no one knows how to introduce yourself.
What’s the problem here?
You have seen this when people market online too. They get one of these training system and self replicated websites that they have seen many times there is nothing new!
EVERYONE IS SOUNDS THE SAME!
You need to understand that sameness will kill you.
Learn how to introduce yourself in a creative and memorable way.
You want to stand out don’t you?
In fact you want to be always remembered as that creative guy or gal.
How do you do that?
You do what everyone is not doing.
Let’s look back at what people were doing in our scenario…they were told this is how to introduce yourself (in the wrong way, don’t be a sheep and follow the herd..lol), they were all sitting down, they all used the same basic script or formula, it is the one they use every week, week after week hoping to burn it into people’s mind. As soon as the person before them finishes they jump in. And worst of all they lack enthusiasm.
I’m sure all of these people are great people they just lack any creative communication skills.
How do you set yourself apart?
Since everyone sits, you stand up.
Everyone begins with his or her name and business, you end with your name and business.
Most people are dull, be interesting.
Now you area asking me, “Well Terry how in the world do I do that?”
This is where the magic is…
When it is your turn, you stand, you pause to create silence and scan the group, this gets attention then you tell a short story and end with your name and a benefit of your biggest benefit of your product/service.
This is how to introduce yourself…it flat out works!
Let me give you a couple of examples…
Let’s go back to Phyllis the Fat Loss Juice lady.
It is her turn, she stands up, pauses and scans the room “It was 8am on July 3rd 2014, I was packing for a trip to the beach. I tried my bathing suit on from last year, (she pauses and looks down) to my surprise I could barely get into it to. It was not pretty. From that day forward I vowed that I would get back to a size 2. I did it. My name is Phyllis Brown, and help people look, trim and sexy by shedding their fat.”
Now you might be saying but wait she did not mention the company name or the products! Well the truth is people don’t care about that they care about what those things can do for them.
Here’s another example, this one is focus on collecting silver coins. Remember you stand up pause and scan then say something like this…
“The year is 1966. In 1966 you could have purchased a drop dead gorgeous candy apple red mustang for $2500 paper dollars or 2500 silver dollars. But the year is 2012. 2500 paper dollars can buy you what? A nice set of tires? Perhaps a down payment? (you let out a disgusting laugh and shake your head left to right) Those same 2500 “silver dollars” could get you 3 loaded Mustangs plus a luxury cruise around the world! My name is Terry Petrovick and I show people how to create, collect and preserve their wealth with silver and gold coins.”
Can you see how attention getting that is?
Remember when it comes to how to introduce yourself, do it in a memorable way . You do this by telling a story to get into people’s emotions and imaginations and be sure to end with the biggest benefit of your product or service.
And if you go to the same groups every week change up your stories. Believe me you will set yourself a part and you will getting more leads and having more quality conversations than ever before.
When you learn how to introduce yourself in a memorable way, people will consistently ask you for your business card because you have want they want!
